About Sint-Quintinuskathedraal

The Sint-Quintinuskathedraal, dedicated to São Quintino, is the main church of Hasselt. There was an earlier church on the site in the 8th century. It was replaced in the 11th century by a Romanesque building, expanded over about two centuries; in the 15th century the choir and new chapels were added in the Gothic style.

The current tower dates from 1725 and was restored in the 19th century. At that time the church received Gothic stained glass and paintings from the abbey of Herkenrode, near the city, and the local painter Godfried Guffens decorated the walls with frescoes.

The church only became a cathedral in 1967, when the diocese of Hasselt was created. Since 1993 it has been protected as a monument. Inside there are works of art from several centuries, starting in the 15th century.

The visit is quick and fits into a walking tour of the centre: the Grote Markt is next door and the Het Stadsmus is a few steps away.
