About Openluchtmuseum Bokrijk

The Openluchtmuseum Bokrijk opened on 12 April 1958. It lies on a 550-hectare estate between Hasselt and Genk, with woodlands, ponds and an arboretum. At its core is a collection of about 150 authentic buildings, dismantled in various parts of Flandres and reassembled here.

The buildings are grouped into three regional areas: the Campine, with brick farms and thatched roofs; the Haspengouw and the Maasland, with half-timbered houses and large enclosed farms; and Flandres Oriental and Occidental, with mills and Flemish country houses. A fourth sector is devoted to the 1960s.

During the season the houses come to life with farm animals and demonstrations of traditional crafts. There are taverns and restaurants inside the museum for lunch.

The estate also has an arboretum, started in 1965, and a large outdoor playground. Nearby is the Fietsen door het water, a bike path that crosses a pond at water level, open year-round.
