Nieuwpoort – Flandres Ocidental Destination Bruges and the coast
How to get there
The Kusttram has stops in the centre, called Nieuwpoort Stad, and at the seaside, called Nieuwpoort Bad. Coming from Ostend it reaches Nieuwpoort via Westende and Lombardsijde; coming from De Panne via Oostduinkerke. The coastal road N34 also crosses Nieuwpoort. There is no train station in the town.
When to go
July and August are usually the busiest months at the beach and the harbour. To see the First World War monuments and the Ganzepoot complex, spring and autumn — from April to June and from September to October — have longer days than winter.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ganzepoot?
It is the set of sluices at the eastern entrance of Nieuwpoort, where several canals meet before reaching the sea. It was there that the Belgians flooded the IJzer plain in October 1914.
Can you see inside the monument to King Albert I?
Yes. The Westfront Nieuwpoort centre is located under the monument, and an elevator takes you to the upper gallery, with views over the polder and the coast.
Does Nieuwpoort have a train station?
No. The town is served by the Kusttram, the coastal tram, and by buses. The nearest train station is in another coastal town or in Diksmuide.
Why is Nieuwpoort important in the history of the First World War?
At the end of October 1914, with the approval of King Albert I, Belgian officers and the boatman Hendrik Geeraert opened sluices in Nieuwpoort during high tide. The water covered the plain, the Battle of the Yser stopped, and the front line remained there until 1918.
Which Kusttram stop serves the town best?
Nieuwpoort Stad, for the centre: the Stadshalle with the belfort, the fish market and the Ganzepoot complex. Nieuwpoort Bad, for the beach: Prins Maurits park and the lighthouse.
