Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Mechelen is on the line between Brussels and Antwerp. Trains take about 20 minutes from Brussels and 15–20 minutes from Antwerp, with several departures per hour. From Brussels Airport there is a direct train in about 15 minutes. From Mechelen station to the Grote Markt is roughly a 15-minute walk.
How many days
A full day is enough to climb the tower, see the Grote Markt, the Hof van Busleyden and the Begijnhof. With Kazerne Dossin, which takes a few hours, it’s worth staying overnight or splitting the visit over two days. Many people make Mechelen a day trip from Brussels or Antwerp.
When to go
Between May and September the days are long, the terraces on the Grote Markt fill up and there are usually carillon concerts in summer. From November to February it is cold and rainy, but museums operate normally. For the tower climb, choose a clear day.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. Trains link Mechelen with Brussels, Antwerp and the airport in a few minutes, and the historic centre is explored on foot. There are city buses between the station and the centre.
