About Simpsons Gap

Simpsons Gap, called Rungutjirpa by the Arrernte, is a narrow opening in the West MacDonnell Range, about 18 km west of Alice Springs. There a creek, dry for most of the year, carved the rock and left high cliffs on both sides, with a permanent waterhole at the mouth of the gorge.

The site is in the West MacDonnell National Park, known as Tjoritja. Black-footed rock-wallabies live on the cliffs and are easier to see in the early morning and late afternoon. Ghost gums, with white bark, grow in the creek bed.

A short, flat trail leads from the car park to the waterhole and the mouth of the gorge. Simpsons Gap also marks the end of the first stage of the Larapinta Trail, which comes from the Alice Springs telegraph station. A cycle path links the town to the gap.

It is the gorge closest to town and can be combined with Standley Chasm and other stops in the range.
