About Alice Springs Desert Park
Alice Springs Desert Park opened in March 1997 on the outskirts of Alice Springs, at the foot of the MacDonnell Range. It covers an area of 1,300 hectares and presents, in one place, the habitats, plants and animals of the central desert.
A 1.6 km trail links three areas: Desert Rivers, with the trees and animals of the dry riverbanks; Sand Country, with dunes and spinifex grass; and Woodland, with open woodlands. Aviaries and enclosures show species that are hard to find in the wild.
The Nocturnal House gathers desert animals that are active only at night, such as small marsupials, as well as reptiles. At the Nature Theatre, presentations feature birds of prey flying free. Aboriginal guides explain the traditional uses of desert plants and foods.
The park has a café and a shop at the entrance. There is an admission fee; check the current price list.
