Shark Bay is a large shallow bay at Australia’s westernmost tip, about 830 km north of Perth. Formed by peninsulas and red-sand islands surrounded by turquoise-blue sea, it was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1991 for its natural values: it has one of the world’s largest seagrass meadows and a large dugong population.

At Monkey Mia, wild dolphins often come to the shoreline in the mornings, and park rangers explain the animals’ lives. Shell Beach is made entirely of tiny white shells, and the Peron Peninsula in François Peron National Park has red dunes that meet the sea.

The bay also protects the Hamelin Pool stromatolites, structures formed by microorganisms that resemble some of Earth’s oldest life forms. Denham, Australia’s westernmost town, is the base for the area.

On the route from Perth lies Kalbarri, a village at the mouth of the Murchison River with gorges, suspended lookouts and cliffs over the Indian Ocean, commonly combined with Shark Bay on the same trip.

This destination brings together 2 cities: Denham, Kalbarri.
