About Whale shark swim
Between March and July, whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, usually feed on plankton near the Ningaloo Reef. They can exceed 10 meters in length and feed by filtering water for plankton.
Boats leave Exmouth to the outer side of the reef and small planes locate the sharks. When one is sighted, groups of swimmers enter the water with snorkel gear and swim beside the animal under guide supervision.
The tour follows rules about distance and time near the sharks. The day usually also includes reef snorkelling and, depending on the season, encounters with manta rays, dolphins or humpback whales.
The trip is paid and typically takes the full day; check the current rates. Some companies offer a refund or another departure if no sighting occurs.
