About Three Sisters

The Three Sisters are three sandstone towers that rise from the slope of the Jamison Valley beside Katoomba. Their names are Meehni, at 922 metres elevation; Wimlah, at 918 metres; and Gunnedoo, at 906 metres. Wind and rain erosion separated the towers from the cliff face over thousands of years.

The best-known place to view them is the Echo Point lookout, with platforms over the valley and an information centre. From there you can also see Mount Solitary and the eucalyptus forest covering the valley floor. The color of the rock changes through the day, and morning mist sometimes hides the towers.

A trail leaves Echo Point to the first tower, crossing a small bridge. From there the Giant Stairway descends 998 steps down the slope to the valley floor, where trails continue to Scenic World.

The Gundungurra are the traditional owners of the area. The frequently told legend of three sisters turned to stone does not have a confirmed Aboriginal origin; the Gundungurra have their own story for the place.
