About Cape Willoughby Lighthouse
Cape Willoughby Lighthouse stands on the eastern tip of Kangaroo Island, about 28 km from Penneshaw. First lit in 1852, it was the first lighthouse in South Australia and guided ships entering Backstairs Passage on their way to Adelaide.
The stone tower sits atop the cliffs, with views over the strait, the mainland and the small coastal islands. Guided tours climb to the top and tell the story of the lighthouse keepers and the shipwrecks in the area.
The former keeper’s cottages have been restored and can be rented for accommodation. The area is part of a conservation reserve, with short coastal walks.
The access road is unsealed for the final section. The guided tour is ticketed; check the current rates and times.
