About Hervey Bay whale watching
Every year, humpback whales migrate up Australia’s east coast to breed in warm waters, and on their way back to Antarctica many stop in Hervey Bay, sheltered from the open sea by K'gari. The bay’s calm, shallow water—especially in Platypus Bay—serves as a resting place for females and calves.
The season generally runs from July to October. In August there are more adults, and in September and October mothers with newborn calves are more common. The whales breach, slap their flukes and pectoral fins on the water, and often approach boats.
In 2019 the World Cetacean Alliance recognized Hervey Bay as the world’s first Whale Heritage Site for its responsible whale and dolphin watching practices.
Tours depart from Urangan marina on boats of various sizes, lasting half a day or a full day. Whale-watching rules restrict boat distance and speed near the animals.
