About Lake McKenzie
McKenzie Lake, called Boorangoora by the Butchulla, is the most visited lake on K'gari. It is a perched lake: it formed over a layer of organic material and compacted sand that prevents rainwater from draining away, about 100 meters above sea level in the island interior near Eurong.
The water comes only from rain, is very low in nutrients and therefore has almost no life, which makes it clear with blue and green tones depending on depth. The beach is white silica sand, almost pure, fine and firm.
The lake is part of K'gari National Park within the World Heritage-listed Great Sandy Region. There is a public-use area with parking, toilets and tables, and a fenced picnic area as protection against dingoes.
Swimming is allowed, but you must not use sunscreen or insect repellent in the water: those products contaminate the lake. Food is only permitted inside the fenced area.
