About MONA (Museum of Old and New Art)

MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, opened in 2011 in Berriedale, on a peninsula of the Derwent River about 12 km from Hobart’s center. It was created by Tasmanian collector David Walsh to display his private collection, which mixes Antiquity pieces and contemporary art.

Most galleries are underground, carved into the sandstone, and the visit begins by descending a spiral staircase to the lowest level. There are no wall labels: information about the works appears in an app or on a device given at the entrance. Some works are provocative and deal with sex and death.

The site includes the Moorilla winery, restaurants, bars and riverside gardens. The museum also organizes festivals, such as Dark Mofo in winter.

The most common way to get there is the boat that departs from Brooke Street Pier in the center and goes up the river for about 25 minutes. Admission and the boat are paid; check the current price list.
