About Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
The Cascades Female Factory is in South Hobart, about 4 km from the centre, at the foot of kunanyi. It operated from 1828 to 1856 as a prison and workhouse for women convicted and sent from Britain and Ireland, and later served as a shelter and asylum until the end of the 19th century.
Thousands of women passed through. They worked washing clothes, sewing and spinning, and many were sent to settlers’ homes as domestic servants. Small children stayed with their mothers at first and later went to orphanages.
Of the five original yards, high stone walls and parts of buildings remain. Panels, objects and displays tell the stories of the women who lived there, and a guided dramatised tour with actors recreates daily life in the institution.
Since 2010 the site has been a World Heritage place as part of the Australian Convict Sites, together with Port Arthur. The guided and dramatised tours are ticketed; check the current prices and times.
