About Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve
Tower Hill is the crater of a volcano that erupted tens of thousands of years ago, about 15 km west of Warrnambool. At the crater floor there is a lake with islands formed by smaller volcanic cones.
The area was replanted over the 20th century and is now a reserve with short trails through woodland, wetlands and slopes. Emus and kangaroos are commonly seen on the grass, and koalas in the eucalyptus trees.
The visitor centre, run by a local Aboriginal organisation, offers guided walks about the place’s culture and nature. There is no entry fee to the reserve.
From the lookout on the crater rim you can see the lake, the islands and, in the distance, the sea a few kilometres away.
