About Bells Beach
Bells Beach lies in a cove surrounded by sandstone cliffs, about 7 km from Torquay. Waves coming from the Southern Ocean break over a rocky bottom and form long walls, which made the beach one of the world’s best-known surfing spots.
Since the 1960s the beach has hosted a professional competition at Easter, now part of the world tour. The winner strikes a bell, the event’s trophy. The area is a protected surfing reserve.
From the clifftop car park, lookouts and stairs let you see the surfers up close. A coastal trail links Bells Beach to Torquay and other coves. Swimming is recommended only for those experienced in the sea.
