About Nitmiluk National Park
Nitmiluk National Park is about 30 km east of Katherine. There, the Katherine River has carved a sequence of thirteen gorges between sandstone cliffs, separated by rapids and rock sections. The Jawoyn are the traditional owners of the land and co-manage the park with the territorial government.
Boats depart from the jetty near the visitor centre and travel through the first gorges, with short walks between gorges to change boats. Longer tours reach the fifth gorge. In the dry season, from April to October, canoes are also available to hire for paddling and swimming in the calm waters.
Walking tracks lead from the visitor centre to lookouts over the first gorge. The multi-day Jatbula Trail follows the traditional Jawoyn route to Leliyn (Edith Falls).
In the wet season the river rises considerably; tour routes change and canoeing is suspended.
