About Yellow Water

Yellow Water, Ngurrungurrudjba in the local language, is an area of lagoons and floodplains connected to the South Alligator River, in southern Kakadu near Cooinda, about 50 km south of Jabiru. It is one of the best places in the park to see wildlife.

The boat trips travel the channels among water lilies, tall grasses and melaleuca forests. Saltwater crocodiles are commonly seen basking on the banks, along with herons, jabiru storks, magpie geese, ospreys and other waterbirds that concentrate on the remaining lagoons as the floodplain dries.

Guides explain the six seasons of the Bininj and Mungguy calendar and how water changes the landscape through the year.

Boats depart from Cooinda several times a day. The tour is paid; book in advance.
