About Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, known by the acronym MAGNT, is in Fannie Bay, by the sea, a few kilometres from Darwin’s center. It is the main museum of northern Australia.

One of the most visited galleries is dedicated to Cyclone Tracy, which destroyed much of Darwin on Christmas Night 1974. A dark room reproduces the sound of the wind from that night, and photos and objects show the destruction and the city’s reconstruction.

The museum holds one of the country’s most important collections of Aboriginal and Tiwi Islands art, as well as art from Southeast Asia and the Pacific. In the natural history area is Sweetheart, a saltwater crocodile about 5 meters long that became famous in the 1970s.

There is no charge for the permanent exhibitions. The museum café has sea views.
