About Magnetic Termite Mounds
At the entrance to Litchfield National Park, a seasonally flooded plain holds a field of termite mounds known as magnetic mounds. They are thin blade-like structures up to 2 metres high, all aligned on a north–south axis, as if following a compass.
The alignment helps keep the nest’s internal temperature stable: the broad faces receive the weaker morning and afternoon sun, while the narrow edge faces the strong midday sun. These termites live in areas that flood in the wet season and therefore cannot shelter underground.
A boardwalk with information signs leads to the viewing area. Nearby, a cathedral mound of another species rises several metres and shows a different building style.
It’s a short stop on the way to the waterfalls.

Frequently asked questions about Magnetic Termite Mounds
Why are Litchfield’s termite mounds called magnetic?
Because they are aligned north–south, like a compass. Their shape helps keep the nest’s internal temperature stable.
Are the magnetic termite mounds far from the waterfalls?
No. They are at the park entrance, on the way to Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole.
How tall are the termite mounds in Litchfield?
The magnetic mounds reach about 2 meters; the cathedral termite mound beside them is much taller.
