About Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery
The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery was founded in 1891 and is one of Australia’s largest regional museums. It occupies two buildings: the museum, in former railway workshops in the Inveresk neighbourhood, and the art gallery in Royal Park in the city centre.
In Inveresk are the natural history collections, with fossils and Tasmanian animals, including the Tasmanian tiger, extinct in the 20th century, as well as displays about the railway and the town’s industry and a planetarium.
The Royal Park gallery houses colonial and contemporary painting, decorative arts and an area dedicated to the island’s Aboriginal culture. The two buildings are about 1 km apart.
It is a recommended visit for rainy days and for those who want to learn about Tasmanian nature before heading to Cradle Mountain.
