About Brickendon and Woolmers
Brickendon and Woolmers are two neighbouring farms on the banks of the Macquarie River, near Longford, about 20 km south of Launceston. They were established in the early 19th century by brothers of the Archer family and worked by hundreds of convicts assigned to the settlers.
Both preserve the family houses, barns, smithies, chapels and the huts where the convicts lived, a rare ensemble showing how forced farm labour operated. Since 2010 they are World Heritage as part of the Australian Convict Sites.
Brickendon remains an Archer family farm, with the convicts’ village open to visitors and animals in the yard. Woolmers has the main house furnished, visited with a guide, and the National Rose Garden, with hundreds of varieties.
The two properties are connected by a riverside trail. Entry is charged at each site; check the current prices and opening times.
