About Overland Track

The Overland Track is a crossing of about 65 km through Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, from Dove Lake at the foot of Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest natural lake. It is usually completed in six days.

The route crosses buttongrass plains, southern beech and ancient pine forests, passes waterfalls and offers side trips to peaks such as Mount Ossa, Tasmania’s highest point. Along the trail there are basic huts and camping platforms.

In the season, from October to May, you must book your start date and pay a fee, in addition to the park pass. There are also companies that run guided crossings and sleep in private huts.

The weather changes quickly and it can snow in any month. If you don’t plan to do the whole crossing you can walk the first section to Marion’s Lookout in one day.
