About Dove Lake
Dove Lake sits at the base of Cradle Mountain’s peaks, about 10 km from the visitor centre. It was carved by glaciers and is the spot where the park’s most famous photograph is taken: the mountain reflected in the water with the wooden boathouse on the shore.
A trail of roughly 6 km circumnavigates the lake, typically taking 2 to 3 hours, with sections of wooden boardwalk, stony beaches and the Ballroom Forest, a stand of southern beech trees draped in moss. The path is mostly flat and well marked.
More demanding tracks lead from the lake up onto the mountain and to Lake Wilks and Marion’s Lookout, which offer views of the surrounding peaks and lakes. The ascent to the summit, at 1,545 meters, includes a section of scrambling over rock slabs.
Car access to the lake is limited, and the most common route is the park bus from the visitor centre. A national parks pass is required.
