About Mossman Gorge
Mossman Gorge is in the southern part of Daintree National Park, about a 20-minute drive from Port Douglas. There the Mossman River runs among granite rocks through the rainforest, within the Wet Tropics of Queensland, a UNESCO World Heritage area.
The eastern Kuku Yalanji are the traditional owners of the land. The Mossman Gorge Centre, run by an Aboriginal organization, is the valley’s entry point: from there a shuttle bus takes visitors to the start of the trails, since private cars do not continue to the gorge.
The circular forest walk is about 2.4 km, with boardwalks and bridges over the streams. Kuku Yalanji guides lead walks, the Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks, which explain plants, traditional uses and the place’s stories.
The valley has records of more than 430 bird species and hundreds of native plants. In some stretches of the river swimming is allowed, always according to the signs; the current changes after rain.
