About Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda railway was built between 1886 and 1891 to link the port of Cairns with the mines and farms on the Atherton Tablelands. Workers hand-cut 15 tunnels and built 37 bridges to overcome the mountain slope, and passenger service began in June 1891.
Today the 37 km line is used by a tourist train with vintage carriages. The trip takes about 1 hour 55 minutes each way and departs from Cairns station in the city center, with a stop at Freshwater. The train climbs past plantations and forest, crosses the curved bridge over Stoney Creek Falls and stops at the Barron Falls lookout.
Kuranda station, surrounded by tropical plants, is a few minutes’ walk from the village center. On-board commentary tells the story of the construction.
Many visitors go up by train and return by the Skyrail cableway, with combined tickets.
