About Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

The Esplanade is Cairns’ downtown foreshore, facing Trinity Bay and the Coral Sea. Because the city’s shoreline is mud and mangrove, with no swimming beach, the council built a saltwater lagoon there, opened in 2003, which became the city’s meeting place.

The lagoon is 4,800 m², with depths under 1 meter to about 1.6 meters, sandy edges for children and shaded decks. Water is pumped from the sea and treated, and lifeguards watch the lagoon while it is open. There is no entrance fee.

Next to it, a roughly 3 km promenade follows the foreshore, with picnic areas, public barbecues, fitness equipment and birdwatching spots for the birds that feed on the mudbanks at low tide. On Saturday mornings there is a craft and food market on the Esplanade.

Restaurants, bars and accommodations occupy the other side of the avenue, and the pier where boats to the reefs depart is a few minutes’ walk away.
