About Staircase to the Moon
The Staircase to the Moon is the reflection of the rising full moon on the mudflats of Roebuck Bay in Broome. When the moon rises at very low tide, the light hits puddles and ruts in the mud and forms bands that resemble steps leading up to the moon.
The phenomenon occurs from March to October, on two or three nights each month near the full moon, and lasts a few minutes after the moon appears on the horizon.
The most popular place to watch is Town Beach, near the center, where a night market sells food and crafts on Staircase dates. It can also be seen from the Entrance Point lookout and other points around the bay.
There is no entry fee. Clouds on the horizon can hide the moon; the dates and times for each month are published in advance.
