Los Teques – Miranda Destination Caracas and El Ávila Capital

How to get there

  • Estación Guaicaipuro (Metro Los Teques) 1 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

It is about 30 km from Caracas via the Panamericana highway. The Metro Los Teques departs from Las Adjuntas station, the terminus of Caracas metro line 2, and reaches Alí Primera and Guaicaipuro stations, the latter near the center; the service has interruptions, confirm it is running beforehand. For those arriving by plane, the nearest international airport is Maiquetía, which serves Caracas. The El Jarillo road leads to Colonia Tovar.

How many days

Half a day or a full day is enough for the center: Plaza Bolívar, the cathedral, Casa Arturo Michelena and Villa Teola, with a break for tequeños. You can do it as a day trip from Caracas or add a visit to Colonia Tovar the same day.

When to go

The climate is mountainous, cooler than Caracas, with averages between 18 °C and 26 °C. From December to March, in the dry season, mornings and nights are cool, around 10 °C to 23 °C; from April to November it rains more and the weather can change quickly. On October 21 the city celebrates its founding, a date also used to celebrate the tequeño.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Not for the center, which is explored on foot. From Caracas you can reach it by metro, changing at Las Adjuntas, or by car via the Panamericana. For Colonia Tovar, via the El Jarillo mountain road, a car or an organized tour makes it easier.

  3. Late afternoon
Tequeños in the city that gives the snack its name

Try tequeños at a bakery or café in the center: wheat dough sticks filled with white cheese, fried to order. The most widespread origin story links the snack to a family from Los Teques.

  4. Evening

Return to Caracas by metro, changing at Las Adjuntas, or stay overnight in town to go up to Colonia Tovar the next day via the El Jarillo road. At night the temperature falls; bring a warm layer.
