About Smyrna Agorası
The Agora of Esmirna lies in the central area of İzmir, between neighborhoods of the contemporary city. The complex preserves part of a public civic space, with Roman remains that allow you to read the layout of porticoes and circulation areas. It is not the same visit as the ancient settlement of Bayraklı.
The lower galleries and the columns help to understand the organization of the building and its different levels. Also note the relationship between the excavation and the urban fabric that surrounds it: here archaeology appears within an active city, rather than in an isolated site in the rural landscape.
Choose a less hot period, as the route combines exposed spaces and stone sections. The visit can be combined with the city centre's shopping streets, with a walk to the Konak area. Check the available circuit, and do not enter excavation areas or passages that are not authorised.
