Esmirna, called İzmir in Turkish, is one of the main gateways to the Aegean coast. The bay, urban transport and the airport make the city a common arrival base, but the itinerary is not limited to passing through the bus station. The Agora, Konak, Kadifekale and Kordon deserve their own time.

To the west, the Çeşme peninsula combines the port castle and beaches such as Ilıca. Alaçatı has a core of stone houses best explored on foot, separate from the coastal spots used for wind sports. Staying overnight on the peninsula allows you to alternate these activities according to the weather.

Bergama, to the north, brings together the Pergamon acropolis, the Asclepion and the Red Basilica. Sardis, in Manisa province, adds the history of Lydia on an outing in another direction. These are circuits that should have separate days, since good connections with Esmirna should not be confused with all places being close together.

This destination brings together 4 cities: Esmirna, Çeşme, Alaçatı, Bergama.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

April to June and September to October typically favor cities and archaeology. For beaches, June to September are generally warmer. Wind can alter coastal plans; from November to March there is more rain.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Five to seven days to cover the city, the peninsula and two archaeological circuits. With less time, choose one historical outing and concentrate the remaining days between Izmir and Çeşme.

Which city to stay in

Konak and Alsancak make urban walks in Izmir easier. In central Çeşme, the port and the castle are closer; Ilıca is favorable for the beach. Alaçatı brings you near the stone town core, and one night in Bergama helps spread the sites without returning the same day.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Get your questions answered

Frequently asked questions about Esmirna and Çeşme

Do I need to choose a single base for the whole region?

Splitting time between Izmir and the Çeşme peninsula usually reduces travel, especially on a beach-focused itinerary.

What is the difference between Çeşme and Alaçatı?

Çeşme has the port core and the castle; Alaçatı gathers stone houses inland on the peninsula and has its own accesses to the coast.

Does Pergamon fit into a day trip from Izmir?

A full day allows selecting your main groups of sights, taking travel and local connections into account.

Can Sardis be combined with Pergamon in the same day?

It’s more comfortable to separate them, because they lie in different directions and each requires time for archaeological interpretation.
