About Chambri Lakes

The Chambri lakes form a complex of swamps, shallow channels and lakes in the middle Sepik, between Pagwi and the confluence of the Karawari River with the Sepik. They cover about 216 km² and change size with the seasons.

From September to March, during the northwest monsoon, the swollen Sepik tributaries fill the lakes and create the large Chambri lake. In the drier months, water levels drop and some channels become too shallow for canoes.

On Chambri Island, in the middle of the lakes, live the Chambri people, who speak their own language and are known for their art, with masks and sculptures sold to visitors. The area’s villages have very basic guesthouses.

The lakes are also a habitat for waterbirds, and the early morning, by canoe, is the best time for birdwatching.
