About Pororari River Track
The Pororari River Track follows the river of the same name, which descends from the Paparoa range and reaches the sea just north of the village of Punakaiki. The path enters a gorge with high limestone walls, covered in forest, with the river’s calm green water running beside it.
The vegetation is lowland temperate rainforest, with nikau palms, the only native palm of New Zealand, tree ferns and tall trees. The route is almost flat and well marked, suitable for those wanting a relaxed walk.
Most people walk to a point with stone benches on the riverbank and return the same way. If you have more time you can do a circuit by linking the track to the Inland Pack Track, an old goldminers’ route, and return to the village via the road.
