How many days

One day for Buffalo Beach, the museum and Shakespeare Cliff. As a base for the peninsula, two to three days to include Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach and a boat trip.

When to go

From December to March, with warm days and the sea suitable for boating and beach activities. Between Christmas and the end of January the town fills up with holiday visitors. March and April are usually more settled and quieter.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Not in the town centre: the beach, wharf and museum are all close by. To reach Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, a car is the most practical option; there are also organized tours and boats that depart from the wharf.
