The city

What to expect from Whitianga.

Whitianga is the main town of Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, with about 6,000 residents who increase many times over in summer. Buffalo Beach runs in front of the town center, and the Mercury Bay Museum, next to the wharf, tells the bay’s history. A short passenger boat crosses the harbour to Ferry Landing, from where you can walk to the Shakespeare Cliff viewpoint. It’s the best-served base for visiting Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.
