From Auckland, about 125 km by car, roughly an hour and a half via SH1, or by regular bus and train. Hamilton Airport (HLZ), about 13 km from the city centre, has domestic flights. Regular buses reach the central transport terminal.
How many days
One day for the Hamilton Gardens, the Waikato Museum and the riverfront. As a base for the area, two to three days, with Hobbiton and Waitomo as day trips.
When to go
Year-round. From October to March the gardens are more in bloom and days are longer. In winter, June to August, it rains more and mornings are often misty.

Do you need a car?
In town, no: the museum, the riverfront and local buses cover most needs. For Hobbiton, Wairere Falls and Waitomo, a car is the most practical means; there are also organized tours.
