About Flagstaff Hill

Flagstaff Hill, called Maiki by the Māori, is a hill to the north of Russell, overlooking the Bay of Islands, Paihia and the surrounding islands. At the top stands a flagpole with flags, the successor to the poles that marked one of the best-known episodes in the country’s history.

In 1844 and 1845, the chief Hōne Heke Pōkai of the Ngāpuhi tribe felled the British flagpole four times in protest against the loss of authority and trade that followed the Treaty of Waitangi. The fourth felling, in March 1845, sparked the Battle of Kororāreka and the conflict known as the Flagstaff War.

Today the site is a peaceful viewpoint. Panels at the top tell the history of the flagpole and identify the islands and coves in view.

You can reach it by car along a road that goes near the summit or on foot via a trail that climbs from Russell’s waterfront.
