The city
Russell, formerly Kororāreka, was the first permanent European port and settlement in New Zealand. Today it is a small village on the edge of the Bay of Islands, with a waterfront of wooden houses and fig trees. It houses Christ Church, the country’s oldest church, the Pompallier Mission, a Catholic printworks from 1842, and Flagstaff Hill, where the Flagstaff War began in 1845. It is a 15-minute boat ride from Paihia.
