About Christ Church (Russell)
Christ Church is in the center of Russell, a few steps from the waterfront. Built in 1835–1836, it is the oldest church still standing in New Zealand. The white wooden structure, with simple windows and a small tower, has been enlarged and restored over time but retains its original form.
In March 1845, during the Battle of Kororāreka, fighting between Māori warriors and British troops reached the church grounds. Bullet marks are still visible on the wooden walls. In January 1840, the proclamations that preceded the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi were read there.
The surrounding cemetery contains graves of sailors, settlers and Māori chiefs from Russell’s early days, with headstones that tell the settlement’s story. Inside, the pew cushions are embroidered with motifs from the local history.
The church remains in use by the Anglican community and welcomes visitors outside service times.
