About Haruru Falls
Haruru Falls is on the Waitangi River, about 3 km from Paihia. Water drops in a horseshoe shape over a basalt rock barrier and forms a wide pool below. The Māori name is often translated as "great noise," referring to the sound of the fall.
The pool below the falls was once a natural harbour: Māori canoes and later European boats navigated up the river to this point. Today there is a lookout and a picnic area by the road, and kayaks travel upriver from Waitangi.
The most common way to reach it is the trail that starts at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. It follows the riverbank through forest and crosses the mangrove of Hutia Creek via a long wooden boardwalk—about 6 km one way. The walk is flat and you can return by taxi.
Water volume varies with rainfall: it is usually higher in winter and after rainy days.
