The city
Paihia is the main base for the Bay of Islands, a small town beside calm beaches with the pier where boats depart for the Hole in the Rock, for Russell and for the islands. About 2 km away, on the other side of the river, are the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the country’s founding treaty was signed in 1840. A trail with a boardwalk over the mangrove leads from there to Haruru Falls.
