About Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls (Waianiwaniwa in Māori) is on the Kerikeri River, a few kilometres from Kerikeri town centre. The water drops about 27 meters over a basalt cliff shaped like an amphitheatre and forms a wide pool below. The name comes from the rainbows that often appear in the spray of the falls on sunny days.

There are two ways to get there. The shorter route is from the car park on Rainbow Falls Road, where a roughly 10-minute walk leads to the high and front viewpoints of the falls. The longer option is the Kerikeri River trail, about 4 km, which starts at the Stone Store and follows the riverbank through native forest.

Along the longer trail you’ll find other smaller falls, such as Wharepuke, and sections of forest with tree ferns. The trail is well marked, with gentle climbs.

Water flow is usually higher in winter and after rainy periods; in dry summers the falls become thinner.
