About Musée national des mines de fer luxembourgeoises (Museu Nacional das Minas)

The National Museum of the Luxembourg Iron Mines is located on the site of the former Walert mine in Rumelange, near the French border, about 7 km from Esch-sur-Alzette. Iron mining was the economic base of the Minett from the 1870s until the end of the 20th century, and the museum presents that period with objects, tools and machinery used in the galleries.

The best-known part is the guided tour inside the mine. Visitors board a small mine train that enters the galleries and runs for about 20 minutes underground. Afterwards, the route continues on foot for about 1.2 km through galleries where machines, drills, minecarts and tools from different periods are displayed, showing how the work changed over more than a century.

Guides explain the miners' lives and working conditions, many of them immigrants, the hazards of the underground and the techniques for extracting minette. In the entrance building there is an exhibition with objects, photographs and documents that can be viewed without going down into the mine.

The mine visit is only done in groups, with a museum guide, and must be reserved. Inside, the temperature is cool year‑round.
