About Gaalgebierg

The Gaalgebierg is the wooded hill just above Esch-sur-Alzette town center, to the south of the town. The name recalls a gallows that once stood there in earlier times, but for a long time the hill has been a recreational spot for locals, with a park, woodland and walking paths.

At the top is Esch’s animal park, with domestic animals and regional wildlife kept in enclosures in the middle of the wood. It is a popular outing for families with children.

The trails on the Gaalgebierg run through the forest and link to the routes of the old mines south of town, heading toward the Ellergronn. From some points on the hill you can see Esch town center, Belval with its blast furnaces, and the Minett hills.

There are also picnic areas and playgrounds on the hill. The climb from the center is short but steep.
