About Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau

The Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau is located in the Camargue, the large Rhône delta, about 4 km from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Created in 1949 as a zoo, it became devoted to birds in 1974. It covers 60 hectares of marshes, lagoons and reedbeds, and operates a care center for injured wildlife.

Several kilometres of flat trails cross the park, with panels about the species, migration routes and hidden observation hides to see birds up close. The pink flamingo is the Camargue's best-known bird and is usually present year-round; in winter large flocks form. Herons, storks, ducks and birds of prey also appear depending on the season.

An area of large aviaries houses species that are hard to see in the wild. In the adjacent Ginès marsh, a herd of Camargue bulls grazes in season.

The presence of animals depends on the season, water level and time of day. In spring and autumn, migrations increase the variety of birds.
