About Musée Granet
The Musée Granet is located on the place Saint-Jean-de-Malte, in the quartier Mazarin, in a former priory of the Knights of Malta. It opened to the public in 1838 and is named after the Aix painter François Marius Granet, who left his collection to the city.
The holdings range from Italian and Flemish painting of the 14th to 17th centuries to French works of the 19th century. There are works by Ingres, such as Jupiter and Thetis, by David and by Géricault, as well as a large body of canvases by Granet himself and nine paintings by Paul Cézanne, including Banhistas and portraits of his wife, Madame Cézanne. The archaeology section preserves pieces from the Celtic city of Entremont and from Roman Aix.
Since 2013, the Chapelle des Pénitents blancs, a few steps away, has functioned as an annex called Granet XXe. There is the collection of the Swiss Jean Planque, with works by Picasso, Cézanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Dubuffet and other 20th-century artists.
The museum also hosts major temporary exhibitions, which often attract many visitors. Next door stands the Gothic church Saint-Jean-de-Malte, the first of that style in Aix.
