About Hôtel de Caumont
The Hôtel de Caumont is a mansion built between 1715 and 1742 in the quartier Mazarin, a few steps from the Cours Mirabeau. It is one of the rare hôtels particuliers in Aix with a courtyard and garden, like a small château within the city. It is listed as a historic monument.
Restored, it opened in 2015 as the Caumont Centre d'Art. The first-floor salons were decorated with 18th-century furniture, fabrics and objects to recreate the life of a noble Provençal family at the time. The rest of the building hosts two major temporary exhibitions a year, devoted to figures in art history.
An auditorium shows, in sessions throughout the day, a film about Cézanne and the Aix region, which helps to understand the places linked to the painter. Behind the mansion is a French-style garden with beds and a terrace where the café operates.
The programme changes each season: between one exhibition and another the centre may be partially closed for a few days. Check the current exhibition before you go.
