About Atelier de Cézanne

Paul Cézanne was born in Aix in 1839 and spent much of his life in the city. In 1901 he bought a plot on the colline des Lauves, north of the center, and built a house with a large studio on the upper floor, lit by a huge north-facing window. He worked there until his death in 1906.

The studio preserves objects that appear in his still lifes: bottles, skulls, jars, ceramic fruit, as well as the ladder and the easel. The idea of the visit is to show the space as the painter left it. The garden, with olive and fig trees, was replanted according to what is seen in the paintings.

A few minutes' uphill walk away is the Terrain des Peintres, a small park at the spot from which Cézanne painted the Montagne Sainte-Victoire many times in his later years. Ceramic plaques reproduce nine of those canvases.

The studio and the bastide of the Jas de Bouffan, the family home, are undergoing restoration and open seasonally, usually from July to October, closing in winter for works. Check dates before you go.
