About Basilique Collégiale Notre-Dame de Beaune
The Basilique Collégiale Notre-Dame de Beaune was built from the mid-12th century, modelled on the abbey of Cluny, and completed at the start of the 13th century. It is one of the last great Romanesque churches of Burgundy and has retained a rare unity of style.
After a fire in 1272, the apse was fitted with Gothic windows and flying buttresses. Between the 13th and 16th centuries chapels were added, such as Saint-Léger with its mural paintings, and the canon Bouton's chapel in the Renaissance style. In the 16th century the Gothic spire was replaced by a dome-shaped roof designed by Hugues Sambin. The porch dates from the 13th century.
The church houses a series of tapestries showing the life of the Virgin, which are displayed on guided visits during part of the year, usually in summer.
Collégiale indicates the church was served by a college of canons rather than by monks. Next to it are the former chapter buildings, including the cuverie where the canons made wine.
