The province

Get to know Rewa

Rewa is the smallest province of Fiji by area, in the southeast of Viti Levu, but it is one of the most populous: it includes Suva, the country’s capital and largest city, and the Rewa River delta. The village of Lomanikoro, in the delta, is the traditional seat of the Roko Tui Dreketi, the high chief of Rewa.

Suva sits on a peninsula, with the harbor, colonial buildings and the waterfront. The Fiji Museum, in Thurston Garden, tells the country’s story, with canoes and island artifacts; the municipal market is the largest in the country, selling fruit, fish and kava. It’s a city of universities, government institutions and people from the Pacific islands.

To the south, Beqa Island is the land of the fire-walkers, home to the villages of the Sawau people, a tradition also performed at resorts. Beqa Lagoon is known for shark diving, which departs from Pacific Harbour.

The Rewa delta is low-lying, with sugarcane fields and villages, crossed by Fiji’s largest river. The climate is humid and rainy, quite different from the dry west around Nadi.
